Meet Carl Dickens
Violinist, tenor guitarist and singer Carl Dickens weaves a lifelong love of language into playful, potent, honest songs on his kaleidoscopic debut album, Pith and Vinegar.
Fusing classical training with influences spanning Celtic, jazz and pop, Carl – a former journalist – delivers poetic stories, stream-of-consciousness rants and reflections on personal and societal dysfunction.
Based in Australia’s Bellarine Peninsula, Carl’s distinctive, vulnerable voice draws inspiration from the warmth of Cat Stevens, the brooding of David Gray, and the snarl of Billy Corgan.
Self-taught on the four-string tenor guitar, Carl showcases his renowned violin playing, honed from years hopping genres in various orchestras, bands and duos, with textural layers and impassioned solos.
His debut album, Pith and Vinegar features the musical swiss army knife Isaac Barter on bass, percussion, electric guitar, production, mixing and mastering. Pianist extraordinaire Kym Dillon adds keys to five tracks, while Tommy Castles brings percussion, engineering and mixing to the frenetic instrumental album closer Jump, Conductor.
